WARTHER MUSEUM TRIP

This past week we took our three Grandchildren on a trip to Dover, Ohio to tour the Warther Museum. Spring break from school was still on. All three of them, including their Grandfather, had their doubts. The enthusiasm was not running high for this Grandmother planned trip. Fortunately, by the time the tour was only into it's first five minutes, a change of heart was had by all.

Everyone agreed, IT WAS AWESOME!

Just to give you some background, the Warther Museum is dedicated to Ernest "Mooney" Warther, the world's master carver. Mr. Warther's life work is displayed at this museum. Beautiful replica's of railway trains of the past handcarved out of wood and embellished with real elephant ivory. The detail is truly amazing as you can see from the picture below.

His rendition of the Lincoln Funeral Train that carried President Abraham Lincoln's casket is truly astonishing. The car that held his open casket is duplicated down to the last little detail. You can look inside the windows and see his hand carved face laying in the casket, the tables and chairs, even the coffee pot and cups on the table. A tiny, miniscul ivory carved key that exactly fits into the hand carved lock on the funeral car door is and extra surprise.

Mr. Warther started his craft when he was five years old, having found a carving knife in the fields where he helped to herd cows. Fascinated with it, he self taught himself the art of carving. Throughout his life he never sold one piece of his wonderful railway carvings. He gave about 17 of them away as gifts

Mr. Warther was born in 1855 in Dover, Ohio to Swiss immigrants. Having only a second grade education, it is truly amazing to see the duplication of the steel company he worked for to earn a living for his wife Frieda and their five children. Here are pictures of the display. Everything is still working and runs on pulleys. His inventions made the mechanisms on the steel company floor run much more smoothly.

He used real elephant and rhino tusks, and the original ivory pool balls, of which where so dimensionally perfect that he cut them and used them for the wheels on the railway trains.

In all, he handcarved 64 intricate in detail, early steam engines, railroad locomotives and entire trains ending with the Union Pacific Big Boy of 1941.

Mr. Warther never seemed to waste a minute of his day in all the years of his life, ending at the age of 87. He would begin each day at 2 a.m. and carved for 5 hours until breakfast time, then off to work at the steel company, and found time after work to play with his children. He loved children and children were attracted to him.

His wife Frieda collected buttons and amassed a collection of over 73,000 buttons. They are all displayed in a small structure on the property in back of the original 1920's house where she and Ernest raised their five children. The buttons are artfully displayed according to material and color in patterns much like quilt patterns. All are framed in beautiful walnut frames. I was intrigued with the collection, especially the brass buttons. Being a jewelry artist, I wanted them all to make beautiful jewelry out of. Below are pictures of just some of her wonderful collection and the structure that they are housed in.

She even has a brass button that was taken from Mrs. Lincoln's Inaugural Ball Gown. I it in the center of the brass button display.

We toured their home on the property and I managed to take a great picture of the dining room where Frieda worked on her button collection.

Mr. Warther kept carving until the age of 85 when he had a stroke and could not use one side of his body. He passed away at the age of 87.

Carving was just a hobby for Mr. Warther, and in 1902 he started carving kitchen knives and selling them. They are still made today and sold in the gift shop, online and through a catalogue. Fifth generation Warthers carry on the tradition and their workshop is inside the museum. The knives are beautiful and carry a lifetime guarantee. I took a catalogue home and envision some Christmas and Birthday Gifts for a certain member of my family.

Frieda Warther also had beautiful Swiss raised bed gardens on the property which are fully maintained year round with Spring bulbs and Summer Annuals. She was a very knowledgable gardener.

The beautiful grapevine gazebo dining area is at the back of the gardens and is a true delight.

Down below are two real railway cars that visitors are welcome to explore. My Grandchildren had a blast.

Before we left, we all had lunch at a 50's Diner called Blazin Burgers, just a block away from the Warther Museum. Yummy handmade hamburgers, hand cut French fries, onion rings and hand made from real ice cream milk shakes in metal containers were scrarfed down by three very hungry Grandchildren and two happy Grandparents. Everything was served in baskets and a large order of fries was shared by the five of us.

All in all, a very wonderful trip and my Grandchildren are still talking about it. I would certainly love to return their someday and spend more time viewing the collection. The tickets are good for all day and include a guided tour with informative movie and all the buildings on the eight acre parcel.

Douglas the Dachshund would have loved to have been included in this adventure.
LUSCIOUS RADIANT ORCHID

I finally had time to finish this yummy radiant (or vibrant) orchid two strand necklace. I love working with acrylic beads. They are so lightweight and versatile. There are matching earrings to go with the necklace. These are hombre beads. Hombre beads are the different shades of the same color in graduated form. I have taken this strand apart and created my own color combination from them.

I have finished the necklace and extended it with silver cable chain and added a matching dangle and lobster clasp to fasten it.

Matching earrings go with the beautiful necklace.

WHAT IS SPRING WITHOUT DAFFODILS

Springtime is one of my favorite seasons of the year, along with Fall. I always have a pot or two of Daffodils to decorate the inside of my home. They are so cheery! I also cannot wait until my outdoor daffodils are in bloom. They are planted in clumps all along the one side of my home. I have about ten different varieties and each year the clumps get larger and larger. I also have miniature daffodils like the ones pictured above in my shade garden. They bloom their in the Spring before the leaf canopy fills in from the trees in our ravine.

The nice thing about planting daffodil bulbs is that they multiply every year and rarely need replanting, unlike tulips. Also, the rodents, such as chipmunks won't touch the bulbs, as they are poisonous to them. They are about one of the only Spring bulbs that are not affected by rodents.

As for Spring colors, I have some new and colorful jewelry in my Etsy shop that has been listed this past week. Below is just a sample.

The above graduated green necklace is available in several colors in my Etsy shop as well as the two above that. See them at: www.gardengatedesigns.etsy.com.

My Etsy shop donates 20% of it's sales to the Rescued Rescuers: Dachshund and Friends of the Emerald Isle which can be found on Faceboo

Speaking of Dachshunds, my little Grandog Douglas paid me a visit last night to help his Grandpa celebrate his birthday. Douglas had so many ice cream licks that he will be turning into a Bratwurst Sausage if this keeps up! He is such a little begger!

Douglas is happy promoting my Etsy shop because he knows that 20% of the sales go to his favorite Dachshund Rescue Group. Being a Rescue/Foster Dachshund himself before finding his forever home with my twin Grandchildren, Douglas would just love for you to visit my Etsy shop at: www.gardengatedesigns.etsy.com.
DAILY MUSINGS ABOUT THE WEATHER, OHIO VINEYARDS, DOUGLAS THE DACHSHUND AND NEW ITEMS IN MY ETSY SHOP

Good Wednesday morning my fellow bloggers and followers. Well, I woke up to 3 inches of new snow this morning. Yesterday, everything was devoid of any snow, so this is just frustrating. I want to get out in my shade garden and clean it up for Spring (if it ever gets here).

This has been a particularly harsh winter this year. Even the Vineyards in Ohio are having a hard time. It was just reported that they have lost almost all of their European vines that produce such wines as Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon, and Riesling, just to name of few. It could take 4 years just to grow them back to producing stage. Ohio Vintners produce some great wines, but this coming year will be hard for them financially.

Last week I was able to get some pretty good pictures of my little Grandog Douglas the Dachshund. He does not cooperated very well with picture taking, but I finally got to take a few good pictures of his cute little face. Of course, the doughnuts for St. Patrick's day (green shamrocks with green sprinkles) that I brought for my three Grandchildren helped quite a bit. He was thinking something would fall on the floor and he could scarf it up. But, no such luck. Douglas is on a strict diet lest he gain all kinds of weight which is bad for Dachshunds because of their long back. At any rate, here are a few pictures of my favorite little dog.

Awe fella's, saving a doughnut for me? I am watching you!

Please, please, please, just a crum of doughnut!

Awe, so disappointed, not even a crum! Good thing Grandma brought me a doggie treat! I love my Grandma!

My Etsy shop has some new items in. Have to fill it up again because I had a particularly large order from one person over the weekend. I love the look of brass. It is so warm and lends itself well to lots of different jewelry applications. Here are just a few new items. You can check them out at: www.gardengatedesigns.etsy.com
These are "Inspiration" bracelets and are made to fit everyone. Fully adjustable by placing lobster clasp on any double link of the chain. All have large Swarovski Faceted Crystals capped with Vintaj Brass flower bead caps as dangles.

Hoping you can check out my shop because 20% of all sales go to Rescued Rescuers: Dachshunds and Friends of the Emerald Isle. You can catch them on Facebook and they are putting together another on line auction to benefit this wonderful Rescue Group.

Douglas the Dachshund would highly approve.

HISTORY OF THE DACHSHUND

Being a Dachshund lover because my Grandog Douglas happens to be one and I really love the little guy, I have decided to blog about their history.

Did you know that these little guys have been around since the 15th Century in Europe. In the 15th, 16th, and 17th Centuries, Dachshunds have been used to hunt badgers? That certainly was very long time ago. They also had the temperament of a terrier and the tracking ability of a hound.

The word "Dachshund" means "Badger Dog. Early in the 17th Century there were both smooth and longhaired Dachshunds. By the early 18th Century, the Wire Haired Dachshund emerged. German breeders early on decided that inbreeding of the different types was not a good thing.

Dachshunds weighing between 30 and 35 lbs. were often used to hunt both badger and wild boars. But, the smaller variety weighing between 18 and 22 lbs. were good for hunting foxes and hares.

The Dachshund Club of American has been promoting the breed since 1895, and in 1935 was added to the American Kennel Clubs Field Trials.

Thursday, March 13, 2014

Hello all my followers on this blog. It has been over a year since I closed my Art Fire shop. I missed having an outlet for my creativity and decided to reopen my shop on Etsy.

Last year I got involved with a Dachshund Rescue Group in Florida and decided to reopen my Etsy shop, fill it with beautiful artisan made jewelry and donate 20% of the proceeds of each sale to: the Rescued Rescuers: Dachshunds and Friends of the Emerald Isle. They can be found on Facebook and are such a wonderful rescue group.

Not only do they rescue these sweet little doxies from horrible situations and county kennels, but they have a number of loyal foster homes that they can be placed in until they are adopted and finally find their "Forever Homes"

Being a Granddogmother to my Grandchildren's red dachshund named Douglas, I grew to just love these playful, sweet little "weiner" dogs. This is Doughlas, and he loves his Grandmother!

They pay for all the rescued pups vetting bills, updating of immunization shots, food, etc.

VALENTINE'S DAY BOX

Does anyone remember the Valentine's Day Boxes that school children used to make to hold the Valentine's Day Cards that you exchanged with classmates? Well, today, most teachers just give out brown paper bags and have the students color on them, place their names on them, or sometimes decorate them.

A week ago, my five year old Grandaughter Kylee and I made one for her pre school classe's Valentine's Day Party. They are to hold her cards that she will get from classmates. The box was so simple to make.

All you need is a shoe box that you no longer need, some red tissue paper, paper lace heart or flower cutouts, stickers in the Valentine's Day theme and glue.

Your local WalMart is a great place for purchasing stickers. Just look in the greeting card aisle. You will find more than you need. I purchased some puffy ones, 3 dimensional ones and Valentine Lady Bug Stickers.

To begin with, just cut a slit in the lid approximately 1/2 inche by 4 inches. Then, you take your red tissue paper and cover the lid, both inside and out and use scotch tape to fasten it with on the inside of the lid. Next, tissue paper the main box using the same technique as the lid. It is kind of like wrapping a gift. Place the lid on the box and have your young person decorate away using Elmer's Glue for the cut outs and placing the stickers everywear.

So, with a little help from Grandma, Kylee is all ready for her Valentine's Day Party.

As I take care of my Grandaughter two days a week, I am always looking for crafty projects to keep her entertained. She loved decorating this Valentine's Day Box and I am sure your little one will too.

Happy Crafting.
"Roses are Red"

Last week I purchased the most amazing bunch of Roses at Heinen's Grocery Store in Brecksville, Ohio. Now, I am not really a big fan of roses, but, at $5.99 a bunch (14 stems) it was a real bargain. I just could not resist the colors offered in the bunches. They are going on a week old now, and they are still beautiful.

Just thought I would share them with you. Don't you think they are just amazing?

"Moonstone" for All Hallow's Eve

Well, it is finally here! All the little hobgobblins in the neighborhood are out trick or treating, dressed in scary and cute costumes and collecting tons of candy.

Now, if you are an adult going to a Halloween Party tonight, you might want to take an amulet for safety. Just in case you encounter some evil spirits along the way.

Might I suggest the Gemstone "Moonstone". Moonstone is that milky with bluish or yellowish tint Gemstone that seems to change colors with whatever light you are in. Sometimes it gives off hints of pink.

In the Eastern cultures, Moonstone was favored for Love. They believed that wearing or carrying a moonstone would bring a new love into your life. They also believe that holding a piece of moonstone over their hearts after a quarrel, and then exchanging the stones with each other, would bring you back together.

Because of the way it travels thru the Zodiac, Moonstone is also considered a protective stone while traveling. So, tonight, you just might want to carry a Moonstone with you on your travels. Afterall, you never know what might be lurking in the dark this Hallow's Eve!

"Memory Wire Bracelets"

My ArtFire Shop now has a new addition of Memory Wire Bracelets. All of these are Artisan Hand Crafted using mostly semi precious gemstones with the addition of glass and crystals. I love the look of black rubber tubing as spacers in some of my designs. The addition of silver or gold charms as dangles and spacers really enhances the whole design.

I put a lot of thought into my designs, using colors that both "pop" and enhance each other. Memory Wire Bracelets can be worn by anyone and fit all wrists. The wire never gets out of shape and the bracelets are very confortable to wear and easy to put on.

Do consider one of my"special" bracelets when shopping for Christmas presents for that "special" person on your list, as well as all my other gemstone jewelry in my ArtFire Shop at:www.gardengatedesigns.artfire.com
Sunflowers on a Rainy Day

Today is a rainy, miserable day in Northeast Ohio. I just know that these sunflowers will cheer everyone up this morning. Enjoy!

I would like to share with you pictures of the last Sunflowers in my son and daughter-in-laws garden. Now, my son is not a gardener, but, earlier this Summer my Grandaughter and I were shopping at a local garden center and she asked if we could purchase some Sunflower Seeds. Her Dad had requested them and wanted to plant them around the house for my Daughter-in-Law. They are her favorite flowers in the whole world. Now, there is a very thoughtful husband for you! Well, the first crop came up and were about to bloom, when the deer got to them. They did grow back and I took pictures of the very last blooms that were brought to my house in a vase.

When the sun is out, their faces reach upwards to cheer us up. If you let them dry n your garden, the chickadees and nuthatches will enjoy the sunflower seeds that they produce.

"Outer Banks Vacation"

The Outer Banks of North Carolina is a strip of Barrier Islands all linked together along the Eastern Seacoast of North Carolina. For sportsfishermen, beach fisherman, surfers, boogyboarders and paddleboarders, and beachcombers, it is a "paradise".

This year marked the 5th time our immediate family has gotten together to rent a house in the Outer Banks in the past eleven years. We usually plan our trip every two years, because it is expensive, seeing as we have been renting luxury homes the last two times. From Corola 4 x 4 beach access down to Sanderling, Pine Island and back up to Whalehead Beach, we have managed to rent on different parts of the Outer Banks in four different locations and staying in 4 different homes. In Sanderling, we rented the same house twice. Always the same week; Labor Day Weekend until the next Saturday or Sunday. That is when the rental rates get cut in half and you can afford to take your family and rent a luxury home. We have never encountered bad weather on any of these vacations and once, came right after a hurrican hit. No damage was done to our area, and we were very relieved.

This is a picture of the house we rented this year. Very large with three living rooms on three different levels, 5 master bedrooms and several bunk rooms twins, etc. More space than we actually needed. We never even used the bottom floor which h ad a master bedroom and two extra bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry room sitting area, etc. We had an inground pool and hottub. All gated for children's safety. And elevator which came in handy to haul your groceries and luggatge from floor to floor. My oldest son and his daughter (my youngest grandchild) used the pool a lot. She is a little swimmer and really enjoys the pool. The "girls" really enjoyed the hot tub that was right next to the pool.

We rented from Twiddy Realty this year and were more than pleased with the almost new condition of the house, impeccably clean, nothing in ill repair. Fully equipped kitchen, gorgeous furnishings and accessories, even a taxidermied Blue Marlin fish decorating the wall overlooking the beautiful kitchen.

This year, it was very humid and hot! Reaching 90 degrees some days with very little breeze on the beach, which is unusual for that area. I am a beachcomber, but this year, there was very little to find that was interesting. One year we found starfish all over the beach, horseshoe crabs, and some interesting shells. My grandaughers managed to find "little treasures" to take home, but I prefer to shop at the local Shell Shop outside of Manteo. We make a trip every time we in the OBX just so I can add to my vast collection of "perfect shells and corals". This year we discoverd a newly open shop "What the Shell" in Corolla Village. They offer kids shell crafts there and I purchased some interesting shells to take home.

The girls make shell frames to take home and my oldest daughter-in-law supervised them. The frames turned out beautiful. If you are in Corola, please spend the time to check out this new shop. It was worth the stop. The owner offers shell art from all around the world, plus some very beautiful shells for sale, as well as pieces of driftwood, which I purchased to display the whole small crabs I had found 2 years ago on the beach.

There was something for everyone in our group. Fishing for my grandchildren, my younger son and daughter-in-law. Paddleboarding for the same daughter-in-law. Golf for my husband and older son and grandson, beachcoming for me and lots of boutique shopping. Total relaxation for my whole family after a year's worth of hard work at their jobs.

The is my younger son who owns all the beach fishing rods, but never fishes! He is setting up his "camp" on the beach for the day with his large sun unbrella that he purchased from the Lion Food Store nearby. He is content to sit in his sand chair with a cooler filled with his favorite "brewskis" It is his wife and my husband that usually catch all the fish. She caught 7-8 this year. A record! All were let back into the ocean for another time.

The older grandkids swam, boogieboarded, made large sandcastles and made some new friends from next door. There were about 30 people in the other house (4 families) with lots of kids their age.
On Monday of our rental week, we had a reservation in Manteo to go on a sunset cruise aboard the 55 foot double masted schooner "Down East Rover". We had wanted to take this cruise for several years now and this year proved to be perfect. My only grandson got to steer the sailboard once it was out in the water and stabelized. "Captain Cutty" was so excited to be able to do this. The water was relatively calm, beautiful views of the land and there truly is nothing better than seeing a gorgous sunset from a sailboat. The sailboard does not go out in inclement and rainy weather, so, the reservations that you make beforehand do not have to be paid for until you actually show up to take the cruise. There are also afternoon cruises, if you prefer. The crew was so nice and personable. The first mate has crewed on a number of boats and was very experienced and friendly. We had a great time and would do it again, someday.
Manteo is about a 40 minute drive from where we stayed on Whalehead Beach in Corolla. It is a delightful little town with lots of specialty and boutique stores for shopping, unique restaurants, beautiful marina complete with a large playground for the kids. If you go to the OBX, make sure you take time to explore this delightful little town and all that it has to offer.
My younger son and daughter-in-law and the grandkids all went "crabbing" in the back bay one afternoon. At the bait shop they were given srings with a paper clip on the end at them. You need to purchase chicken necks and cut them into sections, attaching them to the paper clip. They managed to pull in 12-15 of these beautiful crabs. They issue you a chart with dimensions for the crabs and tell you which size you can keep. Later that day, my younger son (who is our fabulous cook while we are on vacation) steamed them adding Old Bay Crab and Lobster Seasoning, and some of us ate them with our dinner. Everyone agreed that the meat was very sweet, but there was not enough of it. You really had to work for that crab!

Thee is nothing like a sunset from the deck of your beach rental house on the OBX. The area is know for its gorgeous sunsets. I have seen better ones in the past years, but his year they were beautiful!

"Key Lime Mini Tarts"

This is the receipe from the favorite dessert from my Wine Tasting Party. Just scrumptious. My guests had many compliments for these.

1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated)
1/2 cup Key Lime juice (squeeze approx. 2 large limes)
3 drops of food color, if desired
1 container (8oz.) frozen whipped topping (such as cool whip) thawed
4 pkgs. (2.1oz each) frozen mini fillo dough shells
Fresh raspberries, if desired

In a large bowl, beat condensed milk, lime juice and food color with electric mixer on medium speed until smooth and thickened. Fold in whipped topping.

Spoon heaping teaspoonful lime mixture into each fillo shell. Cover, refrigerated tarts until set, at least 1 hour but no longer than 24 hours. Garnish with raspberries.

Each mini tart: Calories 45

Key Lime Mini Tarts are shown on the bottom tray of the white two tiered tray and on the top tray of the glass two tiered tray.
You can find the fillo min tart shells in the freezer section of most large grocery stores that carry fillo pastry. They are pre baked and you just need to thaw them before filling. I filled mine in the afternoon, before the party which was held at 5:00 p.m.

They were the easiest dessert I have ever put together and they tasted just scrumptious!

Until next time.
"Wine Tasting Party"

Last night we held a "Wine Tasting Party" for family and friends on our newly expanded decks. The weather was perfect and the evening did not get too cool. Birds and crickets chirping all around, sounds of water running in the stream down below in the wooded ravine and good friends and wonderful family members attended. All had a great time the two hostesses were very tired at the end of the evening, but, we both agreed that it turned out great! Thanks to my daughter-in-law Janet who made all the appetizers (party meatballs, terryaki chicken strips, fruit tray, cheese platter complete with a wonderful Brie with fruit topping, sushi, etc. I made the dessers which consisted of both fruit topped mini cheesecakes and chocolate mini cheescakes topped with real whipped cream and mini chips and some wonderful key lime tartlets in phyllo tart shells. Also kolacki's from a local bakery that my dear friend Karen brough with her..

We had 13 bottles of wine from 7 different countries and a wonderful Apricot Ice Wine from Canada on the dessert table.

There were lables posted in front of each bottle of wine telling of the type and origin and date.
This is "Laid Back Louie" my mechanical McCaw Parrot that sings his rendition of "Don't Worry Be Happy" all the while tapping his toes and working his beak. I purchased him at Mountaineer Casino Gift Shop a few years ago and he is always the hit of any party we have.
The two "Hostesses". My oldest daughter-in-law Janet (wearing a necklace I made her for her birthday in July) and myself. Could not have done the party without her. This is our second Wine Tasting Pary.
The picture above is me and my dear friend Barb S. We have been friends since 5th grade. I think we look pretty good! The bottom picture is some of our company enjoying themselves.

Later on in the week, I will post the receipe for the Key Lime Tartlets. They were the hit of the dessert trays.

Hoping you have enjoyed our little Party! It was fun and very enjoyable and I encourage anyone who wants to have a Wine Tasting Party to just go with it!
